The Seascape in Watercolour Workshop with Caroline Marsland

Monday Afternoons | 15th and 22nd May 5th-25th June | 2-5pm | £90 for six weeks

A workshop focusing on the use of contemporary and traditional techniques to create beautiful, dramatic and inspired seascapes. Incorporated into the teaching will be information on materials and media, wet in wet, washes, dry brushing, methods for creating texture and much more. Students will be shown how use artistic licence to work both loosely and in more detail using photographic sources of our beautiful coastline. Emphasis will be placed on achieving mood and atmosphere.  General tuition will be given on composition, colour mixing, content, tonal values and drawing skills. Caroline will be giving demonstrations and there will be discussion on other artist’s techniques. Suitable for absolute beginners and those who wish to advance their watercolour skills.

This week will be all about dramatic skies. From blue skies soft fluffy clouds to stormy sunsets, students will be shown how to take the most important aspects of the photo and use these as the focal point. We will be looking a wide range of techniques the watercolour artist can use to depict all t


The sea. With wild stormy splattering and calm washes, this week will be concentrating on the sea in all its different moods. Caroline will be demonstrating how to paint texture, waves, reflected and glittering light, distant waters and close detail.


Texture in rock, land and cliff is the topic for this week. Using contemporary techniques and layering, Caroline will be demonstrating different techniques students can use to paint a wide variety of rock and land formations.


Piers and Promenades. This week we will be looking at the man made shoreline and Caroline will be demonstrating how to simplify a complicated seascape along with painting people.


Regency splendour. This week, we will be looking at buildings with a focus on Brighton itself. Caroline will be demonstrating how to suggest distant buildings and paint architectural details without becoming too caught up in detail.


On this final session, we will be looking at boats. Caroline will be demonstrating how to achieve perspective, reflections, rigging, sails, jetties and harbour walls without the need to be an expert on all things nautical.
