“The Seascape In Oil Workshop” with Caroline Marsland

An event every week that begins at 2:00 pm on Monday, repeating until July 8, 2019

Monday afternoon 2-5pm | June 3rd – July 8th | £90 for 6 weeks

This workshop will give you all the techniques you will need to create your own seascape with impact. You will be shown how to paint skies, sea, rocks, boats, beaches and harbours along with a special session on the West Pier. Emphasis will be placed on techniques to achieve luminosity, subtle colour mixing, sparkle, light, mood and atmosphere Using photographic sources of our beautiful coastline, students will be given one to one tuition on their own chosen project. General tuition will be given on composition, colour mixing, content, tonal values and drawing skills. Caroline will be giving demonstrations and there will be discussion on other artist’s techniques. Suitable for absolute beginners and those who wish to advance their skills.

WEEK 1. This week will Students will be starting their first seascape and the focus will be on skies. Caroline will be demonstrating different colour mixes for sky and cloud hues, discussing how to achieve luminosity and how to extend these colours into the land and sea. Students will be shown how to simplify the sky by roughing out then refining cloud formations to give an overall feeling of bright sky. We will also be using composition and different types of brushwork.

WEEK 2 . The sea. We will be looking at the sea in all its different moods and there will be more tips on colour mixing. Caroline will be demonstrating smooth seas, rough seas and a how to paint a wave with foam Special attention will be given to techniques in colour and tone to achieve sparkle and light. This is wide subject and as such, may be continued into next week. Students will continue at their own pace on the painting started the previous week.

WEEK 3. Beach and cliff is the topic for this week. Caroline will be demonstrating different techniques students can use to paint a wide variety of rock and land formations including chalk cliffs and igneous rock. We will be looking at textural techniques, brushwork, colour mixing and tonal values.

WEEK 4. Harbours and harbour buildings. Within this session, students will be shown how to construct buildings using shape and then adding architectural details. Demonstrations will be given on will on the use of a variety of flat brush work to show tonal values and how to put in figures..

WEEK 5. Boats. Students will be shown how to achieve perspective, reflections, rigging and sails using brushwork and layering of paint. Attention will be given to three dimensional effect, simplification, reflected light and expression

WEEK 6. This week is especially dedicated to the West Pier in all of its stages of demise. Caroline will be providing photographic resources and will be showing student show to ignore perspective and work expressively. Students may wish to take photos of the resource images or have the images sent by email at the end of the session as it is a complex topic and they may need to spend longer on their painting

This agenda is subject to change depending on student progress and although all topics mentioned in the agenda will be covered, some more may be added or the timetable may change according to need.



Oil paints (or acrylic if preferred), brushes, painting surface such as canvas, canvas board or oil/acrylic paper. Oil medium such as linseed oil and Liquin.
