Students will be using charcoal or pencil and Caroline will be demonstrating a variety of different portrait drawings focusing on achieving character
This week we will be focusing on photograph interpretation. Students will be shown how to take the most important aspects of the photo and use these as the focal point. We will be looking at symbolism and the inclusion of objects to add a further dimension to the character of the sitter. Students will be painting quick loose portrait exercises using photographic reference.
This week we will be looking at the use of colour in portraiture. This will include how decide on colour theme using the sitters skin colour, clothing and coloured points of interest in photographic reference. Caroline will be demonstrating how to paint material and make colour sample thumbnails.
Tonal values are one of the most important aspects of the portrait and we will be looking at how well known artists used tone to express the character of their sitter. Caroline will be demonstrating how to confidently use values in portrait painting and students will be creating their own paintings from photographic sources.
The hands. The hands are a very important aspect of portraiture in the half or full body layout and can make or break a painting. Caroline will be demonstrating the simplest way to portray hands and we will be looking at the use of the hands in portraiture.
On this final session we will be using a live model and using the three hours to work in a loose spontaneous way to produce a finished piece of art.
Tuition on colour mixing, facial proportions, tonal value and drawing skills will be incorporated into each session.
