A ten week workshop focusing on the colourful versatile medium of acrylic. In a relaxed and friendly environment, you will be shown how to create texture, mark making, glazing and how to use modern/traditional techniques. Aspects included will be observation skills and expression, colour mixing, composition, tonal values and tips to enable you to confidently create lively acrylic paintings with impact. Suitable for absolute beginners and those who wish to advance their skills.

WEEK 1. In this session we will be using flat brushes and exploring a range of mark making while building shapes of colour and shadow to produce a finished piece of work based the choice of a variety of different photographic resources or still life.

WEEK 2. This week we will be focusing on palette knife painting. From textured impasto work to sweeping areas of flat colour, we will be exploring wet in wet and texturing and looking at contemporary artists work.

WEEK 3. This week will be focusing on impressionist techniques and painting with larger brushes using landscape photographs as a resource. This will include how to harmonise colour theme using under-painting, stippling, broken colour and expressive brush strokes.

WEEK 4. An exciting session focusing on mixed media using acrylic paint and any kind of collage you wish to throw in. Students will be given a list of materials to collect at the start of the course and some collage materials will be provided.

WEEK 5. This session will be about glazing. Using different strengths of acrylic students will learn how to paint in monochrome and then paint over layers of colour to build up saturation.

WEEK 6. Abstract week. A week to have a go at being wild and creative with acrylic using photographic or still life as visual resources or creating from the mind.

WEEK 7. Composite style. This style of creative art combines a variety, or “composite” of different styles, e.g., abstract art with photo-realist art. When combined, they can play off each other to create a compelling visual and intellectual dynamic.

WEEK 8. Textural techniques using glue, sand, gesso etc and landscape photo resources for inspiration.

WEEK 9. Using all techniques previously taught students will be invited to indulge themselves in painting a spectacular still life.

WEEK 10. On this final session we will be using a live costumed model with props and using the three hours to work in a loose spontaneous way to produce a finished piece of art.

Throughout the course Caroline will be demonstrating techniques and showing examples of historical and contemporary art. This workshop agenda may alter slightly at times through the course to accommodate student progress and requests.
